In the beginning of 2008 Coldplay officially announced the title of their forth project. It’s name is taken from the picture of the popular Mexican artist Frida Calo and the release date is 16th June 2008.
"Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" is produced by Brian Eno and distributed by EMI. In April Coldplay began the shooting of the video for the first album single “Violet Hill”. The same song was available for free on the band’s webpage from 29th April 2008. and available for downloading for a period of one week. The result registered: 600 000 downloads for 24 hours.
The album was released on 12th June 2008 and was sold in 125 000 copies in the UK in the first day and 302 074 in the next 3 days, debuting on the number one place for sales .
